Meet our team
We have different skills, expertise and experience — we come from agencies, technology and financial backgrounds. But we are all united by our mission — to champion creative companies.

Alex MacLaverty
Managing Director
Having worked in client services, operations and at board level at some of the fastest growing tech specialist agencies of recent times, I’m equally at home behind the scenes as front of house. I believe growth, high performance and commercial success are possible for every agency – they don’t have to come at the expense of building an exceptional culture.
A natural ‘fixer’, I love nothing more than working with teams and boards to make dreams a reality – from developing and rolling out global strategy, to winning flagship accounts and building the teams and infrastructure to service them.
I understand the challenges of scaling fast for ambitious leaders. Having led teams across Europe, the US and APAC, I get what it takes to enter new markets and unify your people around a common goal. With multiple acquisitions under my belt, from both sides of the table, I also know how to find that perfect match, bring the whole team with you and make the transition work as founders exit. It’s so much more than a transaction.

Everyone who has ever started and built a business has a lot to say. So my first priority is to listen and understand their motivations and the nuances of the business’s performance. Every company is not just a unique journey but also an incredibly individual experience. An M&A deal is the culmination of their success. I help entrepreneurs and business leaders get over their win line and succeed.
As a competitive rower, I understand that making the boat go faster is a collective endeavour and that the leadership sets the pace and tone. I help them to see the opportunity and execute the necessary change. In my role as Managing Partner of Waypoint, I keep us on course, too.
This is an amazing industry in which to be influential. As advertising, film, technology, software, gaming and marcomms speed up, personalise and merge, the opportunities are greater than ever before. Helping leaders unlock that potential is what excites me.
I’ve completed 28 deals worth more than $1 billion in international M&A. Highlights include the sale of Born Social to Croud, Nomensa to Sideshow Group and Waste Creative to Keywords Studios. Before Waypoint I was at ACF Investment Bank, where I worked on high-profile deals in the TV production space in both the UK and US.

I am focused on making clients’ paths to the sale and the transaction itself a very positive experience. I communicate day-to-day with clients every step of the way and support them in all areas – legal reviews, financial analysis, marketing materials, etc. I make sure it all runs on rails and the whole process is as stress-free as possible.
I have always worked in creativity-focused businesses. Technology, media and telecommunications companies are my specialties. The passion our clients have for their business, their ambitions and their drive deserve the best support. Every business and every transaction is very different. Analysing the needs and specifics of each client, understanding what will work better in a particular case and every individual scenario is my priority.

Jamie Learmont
Associate Director
My specialty is operations and finance in creative, tech and performance-based marketing. I make sure that big creative and innovative ideas convert into big financial success.
Great talent and great ideas bring value to the world – but they must also bring value to the business. To be successful commercially, independent agencies need a healthy business strategy and optimised processes which are based on data analysis and insights. My 20+ years’ experience in finance and operations in creative, marketing and technology businesses allows me to help with the challenges agency leaders face.
My core expertise is organising effective processes, understanding how agencies develop and perform, and building sustainable growth and profitability. All of which means greater client experiences and better employee engagement. And the impact is immediately measurable. I can promise you will see the results very quickly in your revenue and profit numbers.

My clients call me their Trusted Advisor. I work with CEOs, shareholders and management teams to help grow their business. I am agnostic as to what the solution is to the problem. I listen, imagine, create ideas and execute them together with you.
I have been an investor, coach, consultant and CFO in the creative space for the last 20 years. I have always believed in, and am passionate about, the creative industry and related technologies. Working with such bright people demands listening skills, imagination and the ability to create ideas and business strategies in less obvious spaces.
Having worked with over 200 agencies across the UK, Europe U.S. and Asia I know what drives value. The joy is helping ambitious leaders go further than they think they can go.
I know the thrill of the ride having been CFO of Iris Worldwide – the fastest growing independent agency in the world at the time. I am a qualified accountant formerly with Grant Thornton Corporate Finance.

I am an M&A corporate finance professional with a passion for creating something new. I love working with entrepreneurs – people with vision for their businesses, who aren’t stuck in their ways and who move fast. We look together into the future with a shared goal: to grow, change and thrive.
Creative businesses are different. They always want to build something new and significant. Helping to build and grow these businesses, being part of their story, is always based on earning trust: listening, hand-holding, and showing options they haven’t seen. I use my expertise in the corporate finance and M&A world to build relationships of openness and trust with our clients.
With my background in banking and professional services firms, I have worked both on the buy and sell sides and prepared for IPOs. I have worked in the UK and international markets on such mandates as the sale of an Israeli cryptocurrency company, a joint venture between two Greek consumer companies and the dual listing of a £300m market cap company on the London Stock Exchange.

Chloe Maddocks
Business Operations Manager
Where there is a will there is a way. The team and clients trust me to find a solution. Whether in the office or out-of-office I want to make sure everything goes smoothly and Waypoint people have as much time with our clients as possible. I move things forward by problem-solving, organising and getting things done – always finding a way in, a way out or a way through.
I thrive on ‘mission impossible’ challenges. You need to find a 25th hour in the partners’ calendar? Or to organise an out-of-the-ordinary event somewhere between Bath and Barcelona? Or to connect you with exactly the right person at the right time? Anything is possible, but it takes a well organised, creative mind to find the solution, to make it work…and that’s where I come in.
Having worked for the high-end women’s fashion retailer Hobbs and at an international fashion recruitment consultancy, I love all things creative and inventive.

Our success is very often driven by invaluable business and market insights. I lead multiple research and data projects for our clients and the Waypoint team. By meticulously analysing market trends, client data, industry information and internal insights, I help us and our clients make better-informed decisions.
It’s an exciting process of constant learning for everyone. Drawing upon my previous experience at KPMG, I use my analytical skills to dissect a lot of complex data and turn it into actionable intelligence. My role goes far beyond number-crunching. I have a very keen eye for detail – I love uncovering hidden patterns and seeking out the unobvious.
The most important and the most interesting part is building the narrative – constructing the story out of all the research and data. This is why you will see me side by side with my colleagues every step of the client journey.

Sarah Woolford
People Manager
I am the people person. Business is the most human activity. It simply does not exist without people. It is their vision, ambitions and dreams that drive everything forward. In creative and tech industries it is even more so – everything is about people and their talents. I love business cultures where legal and finance serve people and not the other way round.
When Waypoint works for clients they work as one team. Ask any of us, and you will hear first of all how much people focus on building strong relationships with our clients. But you can only be client oriented, appreciate the personal touch, value every individual and sincerely care for every client if you experience all of these things in your own company.
So I help to build and nurture the culture of personal involvement and care for each other. My role is to make sure that we share with our clients our camaraderie and passion for success.

I make finance into a creative business’s biggest ally. Finance is not just about recording and reporting your business transactions. It is an active and powerful driver of your business. Better financial information allows agencies to make better decisions.
I ran financial departments in the creative industries for 15 years, both in large networks and independent agencies. I developed finance functions capable of supporting high-performing businesses and their executive-level leadership teams. This experience has enabled me to understand the key business challenges that growing agencies face.
I know how to build effective financial operations to the highest standards. It will liberate you from financial hurdles. The process will make everything run smoother and the reporting will give you timely information and insights to enable better decision making. There is always a story behind numbers. I help both to understand these stories and also to tell your story in the best way.

Joe Chiles
Director
I’m the engine room – the main driver of projects day to day, managing the team’s collective effort and working alongside all the stakeholders. The creative world is very dynamic – fast-moving and full of characters – where every day is very different. I love the challenge of dealing with these everyday twists and turns our clients face on their journey.
My background in the TMT (technology, media, telecommunications) industry and years of experience in KPMG have given me a good understanding of how creative businesses operate and make money. I have 6+ years M&A experience advising company founders and management teams on a combination of acquisitions, disposals and MBOs.
Prior to joining Waypoint, I advised on lower mid-market transactions and qualified as a Chartered Accountant at KPMG in Birmingham.

I am a deal-maker working in an industry I love. M&A should benefit the whole business journey – beyond just financial returns. A lasting, successful deal propels the business, its teams and its owners forward. It’s this bigger picture of every deal that inspires me.
My ability to see the bigger picture comes from having worked in management, operations, finance within the advertising business. I led Omnicom’s M&A activity in Europe, completing over 40 transactions and sat on many agency boards. As an advisor, I’ve led nearly as many deals working for buyers, management and investors. So, for over 30 years I have spoken two languages: the language of agencies and that of financial services.
An M&A deal is like a good marriage: for ‘true love’ and ‘live happily ever after’ to happen you prepare it thoughtfully and thoroughly. Every case is unique. This is why building relationships and understanding with our clients matters so much.
Deals I really enjoyed were for We Are Social, Iris Worldwide, 160over90, Headland, Lexington, Founders Intelligence and Born Social.
-
Gary Whyte
Managing Director
I wear two hats: in charge of our thought leadership but also right at the coalface, a strong operator managing client relationships on transactions. Working with owners means you have to be well-informed, technically minded and also interested in people.
We work in a very emotional field where people have created their own businesses. They are visionary, big-picture thinkers with tonnes of energy – with big personalities and different agendas. They want an ally who can match their pace but be unflappable. I help them steer towards consensus, keep perspective and am the first they turn to as a voice of calm.
Prior to joining Waypoint, I was at Grant Thornton where I advised on mid-market transactions throughout the UK and gained experience of cross-border trades and private equity deals across a wide variety of sectors, including technology and consumer.

Emma Kearse
Knowledge & AI Manager
Knowledge is vital in our business. I am charged with making AI serve our team. Machine-based intelligence allows us to accumulate and use vast amounts of knowledge. New automated tools and processes and quick access to necessary information make behind-the-scenes work more efficient. AI liberates the team to spend more time face-to-face with clients working on solutions and moving their businesses forward.
Client time is the most important and valuable part of our business. Knowledge plays a great part in building productive business relationships and human-to-human interaction. Working with humans is also the most exciting part of business in the creative industries, so full of amazing, talented people. I love working with our clients too, and I use every opportunity to support them in many ways.
